Help me give my students two new softball bats, batting gloves for each player, and a set of catcher's equipment including a shin and chest protector, helmet, and glove.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching some of the most talented and intelligent students in Camden, New Jersey.
Each day, my students and I challenge each other to transcend mediocrity; to never settle for anything less than our very best.
In my years of teaching here in a city that has its share of challenges, I have found that a tremendous light of success and talent shines in the city's youth. It is now our responsibility to allow that light to shine brightly in all they do.
My Project
Each year, some of my female students sign up to play a sport that they do not know too much about: softball. In our city, there is not a very strong little league for girls to play in to develop strong softball skills at a young age. So for most of them, softball tryouts in their freshmen are their first introduction to the sport. Now they may not understand every aspect of the sport in their first few games, but what they do understand is that their equipment often times does not compare to that of their opponents.
As they learn to play a new game, my girls should have equipment that allows them to be competitive with their opponents.
My hope is that by providing my student-athletes with proper and safe equipment, they can focus more on learning the game and being competitive, and less on the inequities in program funding.
