My Students

4th grade was the most impactful and exciting year for me as an elementary student and I hope to create similar experiences for my own 4th-grade class. This school year will be an important time for my students as they transition back into in-person schooling after their experiences learning through the peak of the pandemic. We are a Title 1 school educating approximately 700 elementary students. 65% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. We also support a large English Learner population who come to us with a wide range of languages, such as Filipino, Spanish, Arabic, and Kosraean.

Many of my students, as young as 9 years old, experienced the financial stress and hardships their families have and/or continue to go through during this pandemic.

Many had other responsibilities besides attending school, which is common as a student growing up in Hawai'i at a Title I school. In addition to working on their own school work, many students had to take care of their younger siblings or cousins, cook meals, and clean their homes. Yet, they never gave up and never lost their motivation to learn and progress.

My Project

As our second semester begins, our classroom is running low on supplies students use every day. A new pencil sharpener will replace our old and broken one and dry erase markers will be given to students whose families cannot purchase more. Card games will help engage my students in reading strategies and improve their math skills. The masking tape is needed for an upcoming Project-Based learning unit, where students will create paper mache sculptures of the native Hawaiian animal they are researching. The gift card to TeachersPayTeachers will help me purchase new engaging supplemental materials when needed.
