My Students

I have a wonderful group of second graders! This is their first year without an assistant in the classroom and they are working really hard to become more independent while growing as a learner. My goal for my students is to surround them with a great variety of reading and writing so that they may find a love in both reading and writing in the classroom. I think each child has their own special style and preferences when it comes to reading and writing. I want to make sure I have the materials to support this love for reading and writing. I have recently changed grade levels and need some help in expanding my classroom library to include: poetry books, recipe books, and joke books. I would also love to have some special supplies to help my students organize and develop as writers!

My Project

I am a new teacher to second grade! My students are incredible! They want to read, but are having trouble with finding books that they "love." My classroom library is limited and needs some new "faces."

Our class will be focusing on Poetry and making/writing lists for fun activities (including directions and recipes).

I would love for them to explore different author's writing style and see examples of how reading and writing work together.

I also have a wide range of abilities in my classroom. All children love joke books. Since we have a joke of the day, students love to read joke books and try to have a joke of their own. Even my lower level readers are not intimidated by the joke books and work diligently to decode and decipher what they read to make sense of it! It is wonderful to watch as their "light bulbs" come on!

I feel that in order to help my students develop a love for reading, that the addition of these genre books will open doors and expose them to unfamiliar, but exciting print options!
