This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, I want my students to be inquiry driven in science. My biggest challenge to getting them there is implementing the new science standards.

My teaching experience and career thus far includes a few years of teaching undergraduate classes in history and science, and this is my first year teaching middle school science.

I am coming in to the science teaching profession as new science standards, the Next Generation Science Standards. My school is heavily focused on professional development for the new Common Core Standards for English and Math, and is not working on implementing professional development for science. While my credentialing program has been great at introducing me to the new standards, I need more training and guidance as I implement the standards in practice. My colleagues and I are helping one another get up to speed.

My Project

The materials I am requesting are all books published by the National Science Teachers Association, and all are published with the new science standards embedded. I plan to learn a variety of skills from these books. I will learn how to effectively transition from the previous state standards to the new standards, how to implement new standards practices and new assessments to inform my practice. I will learn how to create a sense of exploration for the students, how to train other teachers in the new practices, and more. The new science standards are rigorous and focus on inquiry, evidence-based argumentation, and hands-on exploration. Having these books to learn from will ultimately benefit my students by giving me the conceptual and practical skills to implement the new standards. The students will benefit from up-to-date and relevant teaching practices. In addition, these books will be shared amongst the science teachers, so that all students at the school will benefit.

These materials will greatly help me develop as a science educator and will help my ability to implement science standards for the 21st century.

These professional development guides will improve my classroom by improving my practice. This will impact my students as they too need to have 21st-century skills and improved achievement in all areas, including science literacy.
