Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 720 students live and study in the Hermosa neighborhood, whose Spanish translation is "beautiful." It's a working-class neighborhood on the northwest side of our city. I'm lucky enough to be their librarian, meaning I know each and every student in our school!
Although many come from homes lacking resources needed to compete with their suburban counterparts, they're eager learners who love to read and love getting their hands on technology.
They are the reason I get out of bed each morning. Our library is a safe haven for all to read, learn, thrive, and have fun. They inspire me each day to make our library a better place.
My Project
I'm so lucky to be the school librarian for 720+ readers on the northwest side of Chicago in an amazing school community. My students are eager readers who bring their books back each week to check out a new one. Our library is a busy place in which students are encouraged to read together, collaborate, tinker, and have fun while learning!
I truly believe that you can never have too many books -- my students seem to agree!
I am requesting more books to add to our amazing collection. I am requesting books from my book vendor, Follett, as books come shelf-ready (with all labels attached and dust jackets protected), saving me countless hours of processing.
I am requesting books that will reach all my students! My inquisitive history buffs will want to read "Bringing Down a President: the Watergate scandal" and "Caught: Nabbing History's Most Wanted!".
My spooky story readers (I have many!) will love all three of the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" books by Alvin Schwarz, which recently had a movie tie-in. My STEM readers will want to learn more about 21st Century engineering, with a set of books about modern airplanes, cars, bridges, ships, skyscrapers, spaceships, trains, and tunnels.
A LOT of my students will want to read the latest "Dog Man" and "Diary of Wimpy Kid" books. I requested several copies of each in library binding to help them last indefinitely.
My budding scientists will want to read "I am Marie Curie" by Brad Meltzer, and "Rocket Says Look Up". A comet will be visible tonight. Rocket wants everyone to see it with her, even her big brother, Jamal, whose attention is usually trained on his phone. Rocket's enthusiasm brings neighbors and friends alike to look up and witness something amazing!
