Mr. Thomas from Washington DC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 10 playground balls, 4 footballs, 3 double dutch jump ropes, 2 sets of 6 scoops, and 8 Frisbees, all to avoid being bored and to stay active during recess.

Do you remember all the fun times you had at recess playing tag, climbing up the monkey bars, and hanging out with your friends? The students at our school have limited opportunities to have different activities from which to choose during recess due to not having anything but a small playground area.
Our students are from all over urban parts of the city.
They consist of families who are tired of the limited resources of public schools. They convert over to successful charter schools. Our school is opening for the first time this fall so I have never met our students. However, I did get some information from other teachers who taught in the area. I was told that our students are very eager to learn, enjoy time spent at school, and are the kind of students who benefit from a structured school environment.
Students who have the freedom to play in an open area with nothing but their friends to play with tend to gravitate towards violence. They play what they see on the streets. I'm requesting lots of jump ropes, balls, and equipment bags to keep all the equipment in one place. With these resources, our students will have more positive interactions with each other, be more active during recess, and over time will have experience problem solving on their own.
Less problems on the playground means more learning in the classroom.
I was a classroom teacher for a year and the toughest part of my day was right after lunch/recess. I would try and teach math, but I had to put so much effort into calming my students down after recess. My project will give our students more reasons to play together, less scenarios to be angry at each other, and have an easier transition into the classroom to learn.
