Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been allowed to teach an elective course on robotics for the past two years at Hamilton Middle School which is located in the Houston Heights. We currently use the Lego robotics invention system and program in lab view and interactive C. It is always a challenge to fund an elective course especially one that uses expensive technology on a daily basis. Radio Shack has developed a new robotics system called VEX and my students keep asking me if we are going to be able to compete in the contest that is going to be tied to this new system. My response is "let me find some money." These kits look awesome and would be a great addition to our program, but they are very expensive and to just get our feet wet in this new system we would need a minimum of 5 kits. I have 125 students in 6 classes with 5 teams in each class, so if I could acquire 5 kits each team could build a robot and experience the system for a week and then break it down and reset the kit and then we could rotate the kits to another class period. Technology is expensive, but it is so worth it. This proposal would help to continue the expansion of a very worthwhile program. My students are excited to learn and delight in the experience and this excitement is transfered to the other subjects on campus on a daily basis.
