Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
After teaching first grade for 3 years, I have decided to move down to kindergarten. As similar as the curriculum materials can be, I know that I am still lacking in resources for this upcoming school year. I want to be able to cater to all of my students and I need these materials to do so.
Well, I have not met my kindergarten students yet but from seeing them when they were in preschool they are a lively bunch.
My students will come into my class ready to learn and with big smiles on their faces. My students attend a public school in the city where all receive free breakfast and almost all receive either free or reduced lunch. Our school has grades prek-8th and has expanded to about 700 students as a result of a neighborhood school closing.
We will be expecting new faculty and new students this year and the transition will be difficult on everyone. This is something that cannot be helped but what can be helped is for myself, as well as the other teachers, to be ready with resources and instruction that will help our students master their skills this year.
My Project
I have requested Math in a Flash! Addition and Subtraction Discovery and Number Sense Discovery, Meet the Common Core Math Standards Learning Center, Reading Informational Text Teaching Center for Common Core Standards, and Phonological Awareness and Letter Sounds Common Core Teaching Kit. My students will learn their numbers, to add and subtract, to read non-fiction text, and their letter sounds with these resources.
These resources will not only give me a way to diversify my instruction with my students but also provide a way for more of my students to be able to engage in the curriculum.
With the fast pace at which schools are adopting common core standards, I think it is beneficial to have such materials actively used and exposed to our students in our classrooms. I truly believe that these resources will help my students find success in reading and math whether it is during whole group or small group.
