Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of District Reference Group “H” which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
As an eighth grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students.
A high percentage of the students who attend my school receive free and reduced-price lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met as well. These circumstances can make it very difficult for some families to afford basic school supplies. Many of my students are also ELLs and need extra support when reading grade-level materials. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources, especially when it comes to technology.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students are struggling to learn the language while trying to complete their eighth-grade work. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
The new school year will start before we know it and it is always a challenge to get students back into academic mode after summer vacation. Independent reading is a habit I want my students to start from Day 1 next year!
In order to get my students independently reading right from the start, I need to be able to offer them exciting books to read.
Throughout the course of the year, students will improve their reading and comprehension skills by reading at home for at least 20 minutes per night. Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes students to 1.8 million words a year! The strengthening of their reading skills will help them across all subjects throughout the year.
