Elizabethtown Middle School has approximately five hundred and twenty students with eighty-two percent of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. I have been teaching visual arts in this school for fifteen years. The art department is requesting a new pottery kiln. This is a costly piece of equipment for our school district. My students need to experience the entire process of creating pottery- the firing process is exciting and rewarding. The loading process will be educational. Temperature calculations for glazes and different types of clays will become a part of my students' awareness of being a potter. These students will benefit from the knowledge of how raw clay becomes a functional piece of pottery. Unfortunately the arts are the last to receive funds. Often the funds are exhausted although research shows that "the Arts" are crucial to developing the critical thinking skills so desperately needed by our students. The ownership of a pottery kiln at Elizabethtown Middle School would enhance our art department's three-dimensional program. The educational benefits would touch the lives of our present students and future students for many years.
