My 9th-grade Advisory students come from many different backgrounds, with many new transfer students throughout the year. For some students, school is just a place they have to go every day and not something they look forward to. I hope to change that by making my classroom fun and welcoming so they will want to come in!
One important part of school is that we need to build connections with our students to ensure they are coming to school.
We also make our classrooms comfortable and ensure they are safe and helpful for our students so that they become more involved in their education and enjoy being present in school.
In Springfield, 60% of our students are chronically absent and cite transportation issues, home responsibilities, and lengthy classes. 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch and getting supplies is difficult. Being able to give them new supplies and books they want to read is another way to encourage school attendance and to say to students "hey, I value what you'd like to learn about and here are the tools to support you." And nothing feels better than that!
This project contains some odds and ends for the classroom, including first and foremost new copies of a popular book that I know students want to read called "The Hate U Give."
With the movie now available to rent, I think it's important to get this amazing book into as many hands as possible.
We have a district initiative that requires accountable independent reading (AIR) in our classrooms every day. These books will be used for AIR time or for personal reading pleasure. I plan to use these books during our Advisory period that meets daily. These books will enhance critical thinking and response skills.
I have also included the newly designed "fidget bands" that help keep students focused on our classwork instead of itching to stand up and walk around. These fit onto our desks and allow students an area to rest their feet and "bounce" them!
