My Students

We are a small school but that allows the staff and students to really get to know each other. The students at our school come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, but that doesn’t matter to them! Our students focus on Random Acts of Kindness and being kind kids to everyone.

Our students are incredible!

They are well-behaved and very respectful. This year, we did a Kindness Movement and were able to get shirts for EVERY student and staff member that said #BeTheKindKind! Our school also loves to give back to our community through our #FoodIsNotTrash program and we recycle food to give it to people in need in our community.

My Project

The benefits of a school-based therapy dog are widely documented and very positive. Research has shown that therapy dogs support psychological and academic growth while increasing social skills and self-esteem in children and adults. Therapy dogs have been trained to provide emotional support which positively impacts reading skills, emotional functioning and regulation, and communication skills. In addition, the use of therapy dogs can decrease anxiety, improve self-esteem, and increase overall academic achievement in students.

Therapy dogs are not categorized as service animals.

Therapy dogs work with students identified by the school. A therapy dog has been through extensive training and is registered with the handler to provide support to identified activities and interactions within the school. The therapy dog would be a hypoallergenic breed and would be medium size so as to allow students to interact with the dog without the worry of being too large or too small for the students. The therapy dog would be trained and certified through Love On A Leash and have liability insurance through them for volunteer functions and would have liability insurance while working at the school.

A parental interest survey was completed during the 2018-2019 school year with overwhelming support of a therapy dog at school. Some of the positive comments from parents included, “Think it would be a wonderful idea!” “What a fabulous idea!” “My son could really use this.” “This is a great idea and I would love to see this happen!” “Jaxon is extremely afraid of dogs. We have worked with a therapist in the past for it. I would encourage his involvement with a therapy dog in this environment. I think it could be helpful.” “I think this is an AMAZING idea! A therapy dog would be a great new addition to our school family.”
