My Students

Stephen Covey wrote, “To change ourselves effectively, we first had to change our perceptions.” I would like to offer my students an opportunity to change their perceptions, to view the world from a different angle.

Our book club is made up of students who are already excited about reading and eager to discuss their latest find.

We have students from every grade, male and female, and diverse cultural backgrounds. They generally join the book club early in their high school career and return each year to participate.

My Project

Owning a class set (13 copies) of the book Hidden Girl: The True Story of a Modern-Day Child Slave will allow our students to check them out simultaneously, giving them the opportunity to read them at the same time and come to book club with their discussion points fresh in their minds. Their enthusiasm will inspire others to read these books and will help recruit new members to book club in the future.

Reading a memoir in place of a standard fiction book will help my students to broaden their world view and get a glimpse of global issues, and they will be able to relate to a subject with whom they share many common interests and concerns.

Students who connect with this book will be eager to read new memoirs and continue to learn about the world through the eyes of others.
