Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at our school frequently come from challenging economic circumstances. Very few have had the opportunity or resources to study music privately, and their prior musical experiences are severely limited.
However, one thing always emerges, year after year: they are eager and enthusiastic to learn about the piano!
Students from all demographics and grades enroll in piano class, and they work diligently and purposefully to play with good technique, read music, and understand the historical context of the instrument. Additionally, they have frequent opportunities to play for one another and collaborate, all while receiving regular 1-to-1 time with the instructor.
It is a pleasure to work with my students, and I look forward to helping them realize their potential in music.
My Project
Piano classes are always popular at our school, and fill up quickly. A large majority of the students in piano class are musical beginners, and they are eager to learn. While most of the equipment is in good condition, some of the elements are in need of replacement.
I believe that all students, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances, deserve to have instruments and accessories that are in good working condition.
Several headphones are beginning to fail, one bench has become unusable, and another keyboard's power supply has fizzled out. To me, these are all lost opportunities for each student to embark upon a rich musical life.
The replacement headphones, bench, and power units will give all of the students the potential to learn the piano with good technique and without distractions. Additionally, this project will provide replacement parts for the future as well as our immediate needs.
