We are located in a college town in a rural area where a mix of families live and work. Our student body is diverse in terms of socio-economic opportunities and our families' ability to promote reading at home. Our school library is constantly bustling with students reading, working on homework, playing games together, and socializing.
You never know what's going to happen on a given day at our eighth and ninth grade junior high.
Our students are smart, funny, and always entertaining. They are enthusiastic about reading and their education in general.
My Project
Most readers like to find stories with characters to whom they can relate; teen students are attracted to young adult novels about kids like them. Our library media center needs books that will draw our junior high students into reading.
We want to build a collection of books that appeals to teen readers of all backgrounds and interests, and our students have requested many of our wished-for titles by name.
These books will be used for self-selected leisure reading, for outside readings in literature classes, and by our school book club. Students will be able to check out the books throughout the year and read at their own pace. Having up-to-date young adult novels and interesting narrative nonfiction will increase students' desire for leisure reading, which in turn will help them develop the reading skills they will need to excel in our classes and in their future lives.
People are often surprised to find that our school libraries receive no funding for books or materials. The books we receive from DonorsChoose.org are some of the only new books my students will see this year. Our students depend on your support, and we are grateful for your help!
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Mrs. Rudloff and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
