I am a high school English teacher who will be teaching night school February and March of this year to students who come from a diverse background of heritages and languages, mostly Latino. They are making up English 9 credits for forty hours. They are dual language and visual learners who get more out of work when they use a book rather than their phones.
I am wanting a low level text that students will be able to read in a few weeks, and be able to identify with on a more personable level.
Author, Francisco Jimenez, has written numerous novels that are relevant to my students. I am wanting them to read his novel, Breaking Through, in order to make connections with the main character in the novel who is also a high school student who faces the harsh realities of possible immigration and poverty at home.
My Project
By receiving this book. my night school students will be able to identify a character who they can relate with as far as economic and personal relationships. My students will appreciate having a book they had been unfamiliar with before my class.
These students also need a low level text that they can read without too much difficulty as they also analyze the character and plot developments.
They will also be able to participate in Socratic Seminars and other discussions related to the topics within the book, such as fitting in with peers, and discrimination.
With this gift of this book for my class to use, I will further support the students' efforts in meeting their credit requirement and Common Core State Standards.
