Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, chess players, manga and anime fanatics, cheerleaders, artists, runners, and volunteers. They participate in all kinds of clubs and activities. They are funny, quirky, and curious. Some are learning English. Many are looking forward to college and careers. They take great pride in our school.
I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials/resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible.
As a high school librarian, I see avid readers, non-readers, and every type of reader in between. Wherever my students begin, my goal is to help them grow and expand as readers, writers, thinkers, and dreamers.
My school is a Title I school with students qualifying for free meals. Many of my students do not have a quiet, comfortable place to read at home. While most of my students can decode words on a page, many have not developed a love of or passion for reading. They have not found that special book, that "home run" book that changes the course of their reading lives.
My students like the coffee house vibe we are trying to create in our library, an atmosphere of joy and inquiry prevails.
My Project
Distance learning will continue into 2021, and I am excited to be able to offer contactless library book checkout to my students! The books requested will be checked out for research and pleasure reading. Most are student requests! Our curriculum is increasing the use of nonfiction texts to better prepare students for the kind of reading they will do in college and these titles will serve and support that purpose.
Teens often have a "truth is stranger than fiction" attitude that aligns perfectly with the titles I have requested!
Whether the water crisis in Flint, MI or teens fighting Hitler during WWII or the notorious RBG, students are sure to check out and love these reads.
