This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are wonderful group of learners with diverse interests. Two thirds of our students speak, read, and write in multiple languages and we are an official dual language school.

Students come to library once a week with their class, but many others stop by before and after school to get additional reading material.

They are re-establishing their love of reading after some extended remote learning which limited their access to the school library. I want to make sure I meet their needs and requests with new non-fiction books.

My Project

Our library non-fiction section is always in need of an updated materials, but I never seem to stretch my limited funds quite far enough. The titles in this project are high interest and often researched areas. The variety of reading levels will also help me provide materials for all the students in my building.

Even though students have Chromebooks and can look up information, my readers from Kindergarten through 6th grade love reading non-fiction books.

You might think that non-fiction books would be considered boring or wouldn't be as necessary because of the ability to do online research, but informational texts are just as popular as my fiction sections.

Many of my primary grades write and illustrate their own books on animals and during that time my animal shelves are empty from all the students doing research. My older students who may not love chapter books, often enjoy reading about weird facts and mythology. I also love to share non-fiction stories that my students may not have been aware of during our weekly library lessons. These books will support all those important needs in our library.
