Our students are a diverse group of 5 and 6 year olds. They come in at the beginning of the year at different levels. For some students, this is their first academic experience. All of my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn. Having a carpet to fit all 30 students would be a great place for learning to occur.
My school is located in the heart of downtown Tampa.
Our school serves students from K-8 so we get to see our students grow from sweet kindergarteners to independent 8th graders! Even though many of our students come from low-income families, they choose to attend our school because of the atmosphere and academic performance.
My Project
My class spends about 50% of their day on the carpet. The colors and letters provide a spot, where each child can be called to the carpet, based on concepts they are working on. Children can come to the carpet by color, letter, sound, shape, etc. The letters provide opportunities for letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, as well as color and shape recognition, which are concepts they must master by the end of the year.
This carpet will help all students learn their letters and sounds, in a fun and organized way.
It will also provide a daily gathering spot for our learning activities and and be big enough to fit all the students comfortably. In addition to being small for 30 students, the current carpet is over 10 years old and in desperate need of replacement. You can just imagine what it's been through over the years. We would love to have a new and clean place to come together as a class.
