My students need ALL of the supplies for our Readers Workshop! Three separate classes will have Readers Workshop in my room. We need bins to organize our books, chart paper for lessons, paper, pencils, and sticky-notes.
Norrback Avenue School is a school located in the city of Worcester. As an urban elementary school we have a diverse population that includes a large population of low income households. This school sits in a fantastic neighborhood with students who come to school eager to learn, each and every day. Our classes are full inclusion classrooms, which includes students with various abilities and needs.
Next year, we are changing the model of 5th grade and it will be my responsibility to teach Reading to ALL of our 5th grade classes!
Running Reader's Workshop for each class will require 3 times the amount of supplies I have from this year!
Students are enthusiastic, engaged, and excited about literature. Our school's literacy instruction is based on the Reader's Workshop model, which provides students with opportunities to work with literature in various ways: discussing, writing, sharing, and selecting their own great independent reading materials. However, it falls on the classroom teacher much of the time to stock his/her own classroom with text and materials for ALL students.
My Project
Next year I will be teaching 5th grade for the first time. Our school is changing the model and I will be teaching not one, but three 5th grades, Reading and Writing every day! 75 students will be in my classroom each day.
As a new 5th grade teacher, I will need supplies for all three 5th grades' Reading instruction!
The book bins will be used by individual students to organize and store their own independent reading material. The chart paper will be used for lessons and reference charts. Pencils, paper, sticky notes will be used by students to actively engage with their reading!
Please consider donating to help our entire 5th grade next year. The Reader's Workshop model is a great one, but comes with the need for so many supplies!
