Due to shifting teacher needs, next year I will be moving from third grade down to second grade. While this initially doesn't seem like a big move, it is a shift in mindset from a secondary grade to a primary grade. I will have 23 second graders for my first year in a new position. That is a large class for a primary grade. The students I am going to have next year have a wide range of skills, but i know I can reach them and give each child a love for reading.
The needs of the students in second grade differ greatly than the needs of a third grader.
These students are still learning the finer techniques of reading for fun and often need much more support than the students I have been use to for the past seven years.
My Project
I hope to give my new grade of students new picture books that will peak their interests while also being on the level they can read at. Many of the books in my current 3rd-4th grade collection are much too high for these beginning readers that I will have. The picture books I have chosen to add will be perfect stepping stones into a world of chapter books that these students will be entering in the following years. I hope to instill a love of reading early into every child so they may find a genre that they can connect with.
