I am at a smaller, community based, K - 8 school in East Peoria, IL. We are in the heart of Central Illinois and near the home of Caterpillar. With the company minimizing some of the jobs and the onset of the pandemic, many of the families are not participating in sports outside of the school. Some of the students have asked for equipment both in school and out of school.
Students at our school generally have more opportunities to participate in clubs, athletics, and the arts, allowing them to “develop leadership skills in a greater diversity of situations.
During their time here, I like to give access to games that they may not have an opportunity to play once they go to high school. Many of the students that move onto high school come back and say how much they miss playing the games they experienced here.
My favorite and very special quality is that the students have strong relationships with the teachers here and that in return helps most students feel comfortable taking risks both academically and socially and can lead to greater social-emotional development.
My Project
I would like to introduce my students to games that they can play for years to come. I watch a league at our community learning center and watching the 60 year old teams giving the 18 year old teams a tough game are a blast to watch.
Pickle-ball is spreading through the PE world and I would like to capitalize on the up and coming sport.
I think that exposing the students at a early age would benefit not only pickle-ball but tennis as well. I love to show the students the games that I love.
