I work at a low-income school in Clarkston, WA. More than 80% of the students in our school qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. We have classes with as many as 32 students in them and we house the behavior program for the district. This can sometimes make it difficult to inspire our students to love school and want to be there.
Despite the difficulties our students face, they love our school and want to be there.
The teachers at my school do a wonderful job of encouraging our students and getting them excited about learning and displaying their learning.
My students work hard every day and are learning how to be self-sufficient learners and workers. This year, their behavior has gone from being consistently violent and disrespectful to being focused on the future and working their hardest to be successful in all that they do.
My Project
In my classroom, my students do not have their own desks. We work at group tables to increase collaboration and develop a sense of community in our shared environment. The tables that we currently have in my classroom are very small and, due to the material on the top, are not easily cleaned.
The tables that we currently have in our room have unusual material on the top, which means that they are difficult to clean.
I want to provide my students with a table that has a smooth top that is easier to clean so that we can clean it daily and not risk sharing our germs with each other. This will allow the students in my classroom to learn about keeping a clean environment to help keep each other healthy. By providing my students with different tables, I am hoping that I can provide a safe, clean work space for them to collaborate and create at. This table will also serve as a small group center where I can host groups to teach our health education lessons.
