I teach seventh grade English. On a typical day, I see around sixty students. Many of the students I teach are below grade level and it's my goal to get them more excited about learning and have a love for reading. My seventh graders don't often get to experience literature outside the classroom.
Many of my students come from low-income homes and school is the one place where they can feel safe and experience nice things.
We have a very small school population which makes students really feel at home when they are there. We get to really know our students and they know we are there to help them. We've often said our school is like a family where everyone knows each other by name and where we are always there for each other.
My Project
In my classroom, we often move our desks into partners and small groups for a variety of projects throughout the school year. Students have the opportunity to be in groups to write plays, design newspapers, create short stories, design video presentations on different pieces of literature, and to complete a variety of readings. Though we keep our desks in the traditional setup for tests, individual writings, etc., it's always nice to move around, work with others, and have a sense of collaboration in the classroom. With our current desks being over twenty years old, falling apart, and becoming unsafe for the students, the new desks would be a great addition!!
New desks will make for a much safer classroom for our students.
They won't come in and see all the random, broken desks that we currently have. It will be great for the students to experience something new and know that we want our classrooms to feel inviting and safe when they come in each day.
