My students come to school with the desire to build connections between what they're learning and the real world outside of the classroom setting. Despite my students' hesitation in reading longer works (such as fiction novels), they hunger for stories that relate to them and help them understand themselves and the world around them a little bit better.
Many of my students hesitate to read because the texts they are provided are outdated and difficult to connect to as a student in 2021.
My school has a dedicated book room, full of books at different levels, but the books that are in there are limited to the classics or are either completely falling apart. This makes it difficult for the students to get excited. When engaged, my students have a great spirit and drive to learn more, and I want to be able to give them that experience again and again!
My Project
This past semester, I chose to teach my students William Golding's timeless novel, Lord of the Flies. We discussed the themes of survival, leadership, and the loss of innocence. The students really seemed to get into the detail of the novel, especially since they could compare the actions of the boys to their own behavior.
However, the novels provided were absolutely falling apart!
Pages were missing, covers were ripped, and some books were completely unusable. This made it extremely difficult as students had to share books or were distracted by pages continuously falling out. With this project, I am hoping to get a brand-new class set of this novel so that I can continue to teach this fabulous story with my new group of students next semester!
