Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Not everyone finds the book that makes an impact on their journey to reading immediately. Often, it takes prompting, encouragement and lots of suggestions for students to try new books, authors and genres. Now that they're excited to explore, we need to organize and facilitate that interest!
The majority of my class speaks English as a second language.
For the majority of them, finding a book of interest can be difficult. Many resort to the lower level books which provide engagement and amusement, but don't properly challenge their academic and literacy abilities. Then, there is the matter of finding culturally relevant books to which students can make personal connections. Add to that, high levels of poverty, where students are not able to afford books, and especially books of their own language, makes it difficult for them to continue developing and promoting good reading behaviors. It's a wonder they're such great readers, as it is!
My Project
My students need to read! They are discovering the joys & wonders of reading! Even the reluctant ones! But we need Reader's Response Notebooks, Read and Respond Prompt Cards, labels and Time Tracker and Chinese Checkers, to organize a library and resources to keep all students engaged. At the beginning of the year, I asked my students to set a goal for their 6th grade year and tell me how I could help them. More than half of the students indicated language and literacy being a struggle they often face. Having amassed a large number of books and quite a good variety at that, we are now in the process of organizing our library and setting up stations and workshops to support their literacy growth. Part of my classroom philosophy is teaching students to be cognizant of their own needs and learning, monitoring books they read, their understanding and how to challenge themselves. As a new teacher, I am not always able to quickly dig into my own bag of tricks and find the resources readily available to support this classroom need. By allowing us to better organize and provide for individual opportunities of learning, students can really take initiative for their academic growth and success.
While organizational needs may not seem like a priority to some, it is key to ensuring a smoothly functioning classroom.
My students take on classroom jobs to which they applied and will be paid for, so much of the organization and function of the classroom lays in their hands. Not only will these students take ownership of their learning, they are acquiring life skills they may not have explicit instruction in otherwise, or opportunities to practice in low stakes environments. Help me help them!
