My students come from all around San Francisco, specifically for the Mild/Moderate Special Day Class at our elementary school. Some have been in this class for three years; some have transferred from other schools at the beginning of the year, mid year or end of the year. While on paper they are third, fourth and fifth graders, their learning levels range from kindergarten to fourth grade.
Each student thinks in so many different and creative ways, which in turn, teaches me something new in every lesson we do.
My students help to me to think outside the box and are always challenging me to push the boundaries on my teaching. They are inquisitive, love learning and are constantly pushing themselves.
Our school is working on streamlining more of our resources for our special education classes. We have been working on inclusion and interventions as a whole to continue the growth of all students.
My Project
This coming school year I am moving from grades third through fifth to kindergarten through second within the special education department. I had the opportunity to explore my new classroom and noticed a lack of fun, engaging, independent center activities where students can feel empowered completing activities on their own while working on the skills from the teacher-directed lessons.
From sight word puzzles that not only work on word recognition but also fine motor skills, my students will be able to access the curriculum and work towards meeting their individual education program goals.
While each student has his or her own specific goals for the year, using the Magnetic Math Rods set, I can work with multiple students on each of their targets in counting and number recognition. The number sequencing sets help students engage in counting as well as working on speech goals in articulation. All the different sets allow for the natural progression of center-based activities after reading or math lessons.
