I am a new special education teacher with the board of education in NYC. I teach a class of twelve students who are severe and multiple handicapped. Our class is lucky to have a big space that accommodates all 12 of our wheelchairs, but other than our four walls we have little else. The district requires each class to have centers for small group and individual instructions. Unfortunately, this is extremely difficult due to distractions and the inability to store and organize the necessary materials. Our class would greatly benefit from dividers for the centers, giving the individuals a distraction free environment. Having storage units would give the staff easy access to all materials. There are also several things a sensory center should have so that students with the inability to move or speak can be stimulated mentally and physically. These are materials that are very sensory oriented. This includes: felt for communication display purposes, a sand and water table for educational play, and educational toys.
