This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach fourth grade in a low income area and am a first year teacher. I know that many of my students do not have access to books at home. They rely on our school library to check out high-quality books. Unfortunately, about half of the students cannot check out books from the school library, and only have access to what I have in my classroom.

I want to spark a love for reading in my students, but need access to more newer, exciting books to generate interest and motivation for reading.

I wish to build my classroom library as a tool for literacy for my students. I believe doing so will support differentiated instruction through better matching of students with texts, and provide the means to the practice necessary to develop expert reading skills.

My Project

My students will have more access to books that interest and challenge them. They will be able to connect and be engaged with books, making reading more meaningful and pleasurable. I hope to build my library as a place where children can experience a variety of book genres and other reading materials in a smaller and more controlled environment than in the school or public library. You can also use the classroom library to teach students how to take care of books.

I included books that the fourth graders have requested by name.

I know that they will be so excited and thankful to be able to read these books. Having these additions to my classroom will benefit the whole class. It will be a resource and location for independent reading, personal exploration, project research, and individual assessment. Every good comprehensive reading program provides students daily time to read independently. The classroom library is the resource that supports children's daily independent reading of self-selected books that meet their personal, recreational reading interests.
