Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How hard is it to finish reading a book that you find boring? Or what about trying to read an academic article out of your area of expertise?
It is hard if not impossible. The feeling I am describing, many of our students face on a daily basis at school.
All of my students in my classes are reading below grade level.
My 7th grade students average reading level is almost a 4th grade level. Many of them are frustrated and struggle when reading independently. Most of them come to my classroom hating reading and I try to turn that into a love of reading.
My Project
Every quarter I require my students to choose an independent reading book, finish reading it, and take a test on the book using the Accelerated Reader program. I have found that this program increases students reading levels tremendously throughout the year. I have books for the students to read, but all of the good ones get checked out very quickly. Many books have fallen apart though out the years from being read so many times. Many are taped together so they can continue to be read. Each quarter I require the students to do a project on the book that they finished and present it to the class. After 2nd quarter we are going to make dioramas of an important scene from the book due the second week of January. This project helps support California VAPA Art standard 2.0 Creative Expression 2.5:Interpret reality and fantasy in original two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art. Disneyland please pick my project!
By providing high interest books at the levels that my students need, you will be supporting my students in the best way possible.
It is our job to foster a love for reading so that students will grow to become independent learners, and have a positive impact on the communities they live in. You will also be supporting art in the classroom. Many projects have been removed from schools because of lack of time, but I want to use this project to foster interest in art and reading.
