Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public, Title l charter school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch and is located in a small, urban community. Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds and include a high population from military families. Our school is a place where children are empowered to become the best learner they can be, with teachers and staff who make them feel safe, comfortable, and welcome each and every day.
In many urban communities, students are not provided with the same tools, materials, and experiences found in more affluent areas.
My students are growing to be lifelong learners, and they are in need of enriching adventures that will help them develop and strengthen their understanding of the world around them.
My second graders are creative, loving, and most importantly - unstoppable in their quest to be successful. Their families sought out our public, charter school and put their most valuable young people in my classroom. The parents are confident in my abilities as a teacher and with these new partnerships and community connections, I enter my room every day more prepared and driven to provide my students with the experiences they deserve.
My Project
A trip to the New Children's Museum will include a two hour Think Tour with a Museum teaching artist. Students will have an opportunity to explore interactive contemporary art installations. They will be challenged to think critically with fun, hands-on experiences that will encourage inquiry-based thinking. This tour will spark many discussions to build connections across curriculum in art, history, and science. Journeying through the New Children's Museum will afford students an opportunity to build on the Art knowledge they've already obtained this year. It will expand their repertoire of art, ignite deep wondering of the world around them, inspire creativity in ways yet discovered.
