The students that I am blessed to teach every day have many diverse challenges in learning in the "regular" classroom. They have difficulty with attending to instruction, sitting with their hands and feet still, completing assignments, and at times communicating with others. They require more movement or a change of position to keep them attentive. They may be uncomfortable in a regular desk/classroom table which makes learning hard for them. I, as their teacher want to help them in every way possible. This year we are implementing Flexible seating as an option for our students. By providing flexible seating we allow the students to achieve the best learning possible. To be the best learner possible they may need to work at different spots during the day. By offering different types of seating/work space the students feel empowered, there is an increase in student engagement, and helps prepare students for the real world where they may not have a typical desk to work at. The students love choices for new/different work spaces.
Students have a clean, warm (not tile floor) space to work using clipboards, or lap desks. Students can lay down and read, to feel more comfortable and relaxed while working at school
A classroom with flexible seating looks different from a traditional classroom that uses only desks and chairs, our classroom is unique and special.
Since our students are all so unique, and special we want to provide them with the ability to work in a unique and special way that encourages learning. Items such as pillows, stools, bouncy balls, standing desks, lap desks, clipboards to travel with them to a perfect spot will allow them to all achieve their best learning. Their best learning spot may change throughout the day based on what they are working on, so students will have the option of changing work spots as necessary. A new classroom carpet will help provide that space to students who like to lay down and work, or like to sit on the floor. Please help support our amazing students learning.
