My students come from a very diverse background. Some are from military families, constantly on the move every few years and trying to find some semblance of stability and make their way through a new situation. Some students come from low income housing and they are trying to be the first from their family to go to and graduate college. Others are just new to this country and trying to learn a new language and culture.
Regardless, we're like a family here, always supportive of each other and pushing each other to be more.
We see our diversity as a strength because that means we all have something different to contribute and we all have something we can learn from each other. My students all have different challenges but they're all striving for the same goals, an education and the bright future it affords.
My Project
I teach middle school students here in Kailua, Hawaii. I specifically teach math but I work with my team on trying to create interesting, real world projects that touch upon multiple disciplines to help engage our students.
So they need new sturdy calculators to do science and math projects.
We do provide calculators every year but they are simple calculators that tend to start falling apart towards the end of the year. So I end up scrounging other classes to borrow calculators. I want to give them calculators that will last for years and that will survive if we go outside and move around the campus and our community.
Having the calculators allow our students who traditionally struggle in math still engage in our projects and lessons that involve more complex science and math. We do think it is important for our students to have these skills but we also need to meet them where they are in their knowledge and these calculators will greatly help us.
