This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine, it is your first day of middle school, a time that is already as awkward as can be, and you are in a new building with a new teacher and new classmates...literally. Your building is so new that there is in fact, still construction going on down the hall and there is no cafeteria or gym yet.
This year I have the humbling task of teaching in an underprivileged neighborhood in Illinois.
As a minority, I know the importance of education for minorities and the impact that it can make on their lives. My students will be attending a brand new charter school that won't be completely finished until mid-November.
As you can imagine, with a new building comes many obstacles that our teachers and students will have to overcome. Supplies and resources are very limited as finishing the building has become priority number 1.
My Project
I am excited to say that I will be teaching 7th grade social studies: American History. Social studies was always my favorite subject as a student and I hope to make it fun and enjoyable for my students. A projector would make a world of a difference as it will allow me to share the stories of our nation in a different light.
Rather than just reading out of their textbooks, I would like my students to be able to watch clips, see different articles, and visualize how the past took place just like I was able to do in my social studies classroom as a kid. I want my student to have the skills they need to be great historians.. and the document camera will allow me to model for them the skills that they will need to do just that.
I am on a mission to create Historians who are passionate and knowledgeable about our country.
