This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a background of poverty. Many students have unstable living conditions. They don't know where they'll sleep the next night and they're not sure if there will be dinner. But when they come to school, my goal is to make them feel safe, to make them feel secure and to make them feel loved.
My biggest goal is to instill a thirst for knowledge in my students, to create life long learners.
I never want my students to think they are limited by their circumstances. I long for my students to be propelled forward, to become a catalyst for scholastic, social and personal change.
My Project
My students need books that speak to their interests. We are always encouraging students to read and enjoy books, but if we don't have titles that speak to them it makes it much more difficult to encourage them to take a chance on reading.
We encourage students to make their own choices in their learning, we do this is part by encouraging them to take part in books clubs of their choice.
Students are engaged in these clubs and learning occurs at their own pace. It's nice to see students work in groups and direct their own learning, while managing themselves.
