Our school is extremely diverse, which is why I love it so much.
There are many English language learners in our school. In fact, there are about 15 different languages present at our school. Our school is a Title I school, so often times students come from lower economic backgrounds. Around 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We have a large class size, but the feel of our classroom is one that does not come often. Every student in our class knows he or she is important and brings something special to the classroom.
My Project
My students LOVE to read. We are lucky enough to devote an hour a day to reading, plus any other time throughout the day where we can fit it in! Students have the opportunity to choose from many books in our classroom library. The students are always so excited to book shop! The power of choice is a beautiful thing for young readers. However, lately, students are finding it difficult to find books that truly pique their interests as readers. Many of the books have been read by students previously or they are wanting more books by some of our favorite authors. Spicing up our classroom library with some new and exciting books will help students continue to be motivated to read. Some of the books will help with social skills such has showing kindness, being honest, and how to handle our emotions. As an educator, I feel part of my job is to help my students develop these skills. Other books are on nonfiction topics my students have been interested in throughout the year. While others are heartfelt stories that students will be able to connect with. All of these would be WONDERFUL additions to our classroom library.
