This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I elementary school in Lynchburg, Virginia where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. As a teacher in a high-poverty school, my students face a lot of challenges in and outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my students still have a strong desire to learn.
Over 75% of the students in my school are of racial minorities and over 50% of the students are black.
My Project
My students are very excited each time a new book comes into our classroom. They need more books to help them see themselves in our classroom library. They need to see characters who look like them and experience a life similar to their own. Students need a chance to experience these books that mirror their own lives so that they are able to build a love of reading and feel like our classroom library reflects them and their interests.
My students also need a chance to experience and learn about people and cultures of those different than themselves.
They need a library that will give them a chance to have a window into the lives of people different than themselves. These books will allow my students an opportunity to have both mirrors and windows in our classroom library.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
