Our students and community have experienced a great deal of loss due to Hurricane Florence this fall. Almost everyone has been touched by this storm whether they personally had damage or know someone who did.
These kids are resilient, and hearing stories of them helping one another even when some of them have lost so much is inspiring.
Students are constantly asking if I have any new books, and unfortunately my answer is almost always no. I think being able to provide them with new books and to complete some of their favorite series would be a great way to give something back to them.
My Project
Reading is critical to the learning process, and students that are active readers are often more successful in the classroom. New books will boost morale among these students who have lost so much and keep them actively engaged in learning on their own time. Learning about new other cultures and experiences broadens their horizons and keeps students thinking. For example in Love, Hate, and Other Filters they can learn how bigotry and hatred effects others and how their personal actions can change perceptions.
Reading allows students an escape which is needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.
Many students spent the time off from the hurricane helping friends and neighbors clean up their homes. I think they deserve the opportunity to escape to some new worlds for a bit, and the fact they will learn something during their reading adventures is a bonus!
