My Students
My school supports a diverse community of students. Our belief is that students learn about real-world issues through authentic experiences. Students at the Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning school come from many areas of Queens. While some eighth graders are reading at a tenth grade reading level, others are reading on a fourth grade reading level; there is a large range of reading abilities.
Students often struggle with selecting "just right" books for themselves. By having a classroom library filled with relatable, current, and popular books at varying levels of complexity, students will be more likely to find a book they love. Our students' stories are being told, but if they don't have access to a book in which they see their own story, they are less inclined to read. By providing students with access to their own stories, they will be more active engaged readers.
My Project
As an English Language Arts teacher, it's important that my students have access to literature in which they can see themselves and other members of society to build empathy.
In my classroom library, I want to be able to provide books where students can engage with characters who are like them or can learn from them.
Books like The Hate U Give, My Family Divided, and Americanized are just a few of the titles that relate to student experiences in some capacity. Whether it's reading at home, in ELA class, or during our twice a week Silent Sustained Reading time, I can't wait for students to dive in and talk about what they read.
