Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Mr. W., this book is boring."
It's a statement I've heard too much. A great way for students to read more and to learn how to read more thoroughly is to give them something they love. Heck, let's try and give them something they would WANT to read.
My students come from strong family homes, but reading is not always emphasized.
About 90% of our students come from 1st or 2nd generation immigrant families where the parents work many jobs to make sure their children are offered opportunities. Our school is an urban public school in a major city in Illinois.
My Project
Our students need to be building their imaginations with BOOKS some of the time. Movies, TV, and video games can only foster so much creativity. The books I've requested are relatively new pieces of fiction that have proved to be engaging to students across America. I have requested a Hunger Games set and a Harry Potter set, along with a few other titles. As a 2nd year teacher, I'm doing my best to modernize the out-of-date library handed down to me.
Great people continue to write young adult books and we need to give students like mine, who don't have the opportunity to access these books regularly, the chance to read them.
Engaging kids with well crafted material will keep them reading in volume, which will make them better readers.
Better readers make better citizens. Better readers earn better opportunities. We just have to show them that reading isn't "always boring."
