This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at our school come from multicultural, multilingual, and multi-socioeconomic backgrounds. Our classrooms range from ones that have advanced students, second language learners, struggling students, students with special needs, and everything in between.
Our diversity is what makes our school as unique as the world language we offer for foreign language credit: American Sign Language (ASL).
Our school is the only one in our district that offers ASL, and the only one within 30 miles of any other district.
My Project
There is nothing like the smell of new books! In this virtual world, some still love the idea of holding a new book in their hands! Our American Sign Language class not only learns about the language, but the culture, history, and literature of the Deaf Community.
These new books help us to further immerse ourselves into the Deaf world, learning about what make this a distinct and unique culture within American Society.
Books like these help my students become further advocates for the Deaf Community, They learn about the discrimination, struggles, oppression, but also about the strengths and triumphs they experience!
