Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an integrated preschool classroom located in an urban city. Most families are living below the poverty line. The classroom is made up of two sessions with fifteen children in each. The children range in ages from 3-5. Half of the children are diagnosed with special needs with developmental levels ranging from 15 months to six years old. Many of the children are also non-English speaking.
It is my goal to make these children's first school experience a memorable one.
For many of the children, when entering the classroom, it is their first opportunity to interact with peers their own age, learn songs, listen to stories, and work together to create things.
Throughout the year the children learn to be compassionate towards others and how to be a good friend. It is wonderful to watch the children teach and encourage others when needed.
My Project
Being able to add these books to my classroom library would create a space that new readers will want to visit. Preschoolers are always saying that they "can't read". These books will help enforce the idea that you don't have to read the words to enjoy a book. The books with sounds will encourage children to explore new books and have positive experiences with them. The First Word, First Animals and etc series will help with my lowest level learners. Many of the kids in my class are working on vocabulary and classification. Having sturdy board books with simple and bright colors would be wonderful. The books with CDs are another way to encourage learners to use their imaginations when hearing a story. The music provides some support for this developing skill.
