I teach at an on-base public school in third grade. I am a first year teacher who has been subbing for the past three years. I have finally made my dream come true with having a classroom to call my own. My first week with my students has been both amazing and eye opening. My students are complete book lovers! They are eager to read at any time of the day! Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school and classroom library to check out books.
They are curious students with a drive to get lost in literature.
This can be so hard to find. By having more books in my new classroom my students will be able to participate in book club where they further investigate their comprehension and connections to the literature.
The majority of my students live on base and have one or even both parents who are in the military. I have multiple students with parents who are deployed at different times of the year. Some students go months without seeing their parents, which can really take a toll on their days in the classroom.
My Project
In my first week with my new students I have really come to find how much they truly enjoy reading. I have seen them become fully emerged in a good book. Being a first year teacher I cannot make this happen on my own. I want my students to feel like they have an abundance of books to choose to read, fall in love with, then re-read them over and over again! From having these books, we will really be able to work on our comprehension and reading levels. I want my students to become life long readers! Some of these children have parents who are stationed in a different country and giving them a better chance to escape that reality through reading is my biggest goal.
