Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students are avid readers, however, I have some students who're very hesitant to pick up a book because of their reading level. We are a South Louisiana school with a population of 826 students with about 80% on free or reduced priced lunch with limited access to the public library or to a personal library at home. The majority of students are Hispanic with limited English skills, the second majority are African American, and the third are Caucasian.
My Project
In my school library, I have a core group of students who love to read anything they can get their hands on. We also have a large population of students throughout the school who have a low reading level and so they're reluctant to come to the library to read a novel.
The goal of this project is to enhance three collections (graphic novels, nonfiction books on holidays around the world, and my foreign language novels) in my library that will enrich the reluctant and the avid readers with stories they would otherwise never read because they're classics and not today's popular novels.
