Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Young minds learn best through hands-on activities and independent practice. We need some basic classroom supplies to make the standard first grade curriculum more engaging and more accessible for every learner. My students are facing multiple barriers to accessing this instruction, including socioeconomic status, home language barriers, and special education classifications.
My first grade bilingual class is made up of both students that were born in the United States and students born in Central America, all with limited English proficiency.
They are excited to learn every day and so willing to practice their newly acquired language skills!
My Project
My First Grade classroom is home to bilingual students that were both born here and have recently immigrated from Central America. Though we have many English language resources, we need Spanish language resources for our newcomers starting off with the basics.
In Central America, students usually don't start studying the alphabet and reading until 7 years old - which is equivalent to our Second Grade!
When these students come in for the first time as 7 year olds, they need intensive remediation. They need to catch up on Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade curriculum all at once! Placing an English textbook in front of them won't help them learn as quickly as introducing the alphabet in Spanish. Once they can read in Spanish, they can transfer that knowledge over to English as they learn the new language.
Please help support our newest students as they enter our school system. Often these new immigrants are experiencing trauma from crime in their home countries, culture shock, and feelings of isolation. Please help make school a little more welcoming and accessible as they adjust to their new home. We want every student to have a successful school year!
