The lab equipment and supplies are not readily available to allow students to grasp science concepts and allow for inquiry based instruction.
My school is a suburban school in a minority majority district.
Typically, my students are categorized as minority and economically disadvantaged. My students struggle to bring the basic school supplies to class, let alone supplies for a lab.
My Project
The supplies I am requesting are start up supplies for a new AP Environmental class. The supplies include soil test kits, water test kits, wastewater treatment kit, species interaction kits, population growth kits, radiation kits, as well as the living components of brine shrimp, pill bugs, earthworms, duckweed, and elodea. These supplies will allow my student not only to be successful on the AP Environmental Science test, but also will allow for discussion and "Ah- ha" moments in class. Many student work outside of school, have their own families to take care of and these supplies would allow up greater opportunity.
Without the project, my AP ES students will not be able to successfully complete this course, do meaning labs, have inquiry moments, or be able to take the AP test.
This may even open the door to careers they never thought of or allow them to pursue higher education after high school.
