My students need a refill of the AP biology materials from last year and new lab kits/items to vary the types of labs we do and keep science interesting.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students like to "do" science more than anything. A typical day can involve a quick lecture and then we move on to an activity that helps students see the concepts instead of thinking about them.
My students are a fun bunch.
Many of the students I have in my classes are students I've already had in another one of my science classes.Because our school is small, we only have two science teachers. My students mainly come from the surrounding area, which is a high poverty neighborhood near the heart of Los Angeles. Even though they sometimes struggle with the vocabulary of science, they still love hands on activities. They are always asking about the next lab activity, but because we are a small and relatively young charter school, our funds have not allowed us to do as labs as we would like.
My Project
The resources from this project will benefit my AP Biology, Chemistry and Biology classes. The materials will allow my new students next year to complete many of the labs the students completed this year. This will allow me to maintain the rigor of the AP Biology curriculum and expand on it with a few new labs such as the transpiration lab that we did not get to complete this year. Some of the materials in this project will help my Chemistry students complete many of the labs that we had some supplies for, but needed a few more chemicals. With the potassium chlorate, my Chemistry students will finally be able to see the demo with the exploding gummy bear. In my regular Biology class, I like to challenge my students to complete some of the AP Biology labs, so some of the lab supplies ordered for the AP Biology class will also be used in my regular Biology class.
Donations for this project will improve all of the science classes that I teach.
Mostly, this project allows me to continue to do the required AP Biology labs and add new labs to my Chemistry and Biology classes. I strongly believe that having more hands on activities and labs will increase the engagement with all of my students.
