Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday when I walk into my classroom we have a routine: I say "Good morning First Grade...." and all of my 19 students reply "Good morning Ms. Hernandez!" In response I say, "Today is going to be an exciting day, BUT...." and they reply "it's always an exciting day in our classroom!"
I have been teaching 1st grade for the past 2 years at a Title I school located in a small community that serves in a high-poverty area.
Many of the students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures (which I love!). Starting next year, in August, I will be transitioning from a 1st Grade General Education class to a 5th Grade Gifted and Talented class! There are many misconceptions revolved around my future students who are Gifted and Talented. "They don't need help, they are already smart." Although I will not meet my students until August 2014, I know that they will be amazing individuals with unique backgrounds and unlimited potential waiting to be unlocked. I know that they will be creative thinkers, scientific explorers, future leaders, and passionate life-long learners. These students are the future leaders of the world and are exceptional individuals with potential that could change how we live with the next greatest invention or scientific study!
My Project
Over the past 2 years years I have started accumulating supplies all geared towards Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade level. As any dedicated educator, I want the most effective and meaningful educational materials for my 5th grade students. The supplies that I am asking for will help my future 5th graders start off the year on the right foot! I am requesting name plates for each of my students in order to give them ownership on the first day of school in our room. I am requesting reusable Write & Wipe pocket slips/markers in order for my students to use at a center or as a review practice. I am requesting sand timers for my students to use to test and practice their skills in reading/writing/math (who doesn't like to beat the timer?!?!). I am also requesting a class set of Write & Write Answer Boards in which my students will use to play review games of material they have learned as a whole class (Jeopardy style! "I will take Grammar Jam for $400 Alex...).
By donating to this project, my students will be coming into a class filled with materials ready to challenge them and unlock their potential.
All of the materials will allow my students to interact with each other cooperatively and collaboratively as leaders. This type of cooperative learning allows individuals to practice/review not only academic content, but also social skills they will need as future leaders. As Stephen Covey would say, "Synergize: together is better."
