Our school has the privilege to teach a wide variety of students. They are mostly from the nearby neighborhoods where our student population is changing slowly. We are becoming a low-income school where our children are not given the opportunities or resources that others may receive.
It is imperative to enhance and engage these students so they can understand the importance of a solid education.
As a district, we provide the students many black and white copied stories to read, but these lack the colorful text that really pulls students into learning.
By providing the students with subscriptions to the magazine Storyworks Junior, they will be fully engaged in our daily learning due to the colorful pictures and real photographs. Students need to opportunity to read a variety of texts and genres, and this is the perfect magazine for them.
Wouldn't you choose a colorful text over a black and white one?
My students will have the opportunity read not only fiction but also nonfiction and even put on plays found in Storyworks. I also have the ESE fused classroom this year, so it's that much more important to find resources that interest and catch students' eyes!
I have used Storyworks in the past, and the students are always excited to see what they will be reading about in it next. How T.V.s have changed? How toilets have evolved over time? What was the first hamburger joint in the U.S.? All of these topics make it easier for students to grasp the standards that they are expected to learn.
