Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Somalia, Kenya, Guatemala, Vietnam) and most of the time are new to the country and the culture. Some of them lack formal education or have big gaps in it. Others are being send here from their parent(s) for better education. All of them face the challenge of learning English as their second, third, or even fourth language. Even though some kids come from broken families and deal with difficult home situation, they find the strength to show up to school and work on their English language skills. I love to discover their talents (singing, rapping, acting, drawing etc.) and use those as a way to improve their English.
My Project
My goal is that every student in my class is producing and learning. Having the selected supplies available in the classroom it will help them with the literal put-thoughts-and-ideas-on paper process. Throughout the year my kids will work on variety of projects and presentations such as creating postcards, brochures, posters, identity maps, conduct surveys, take interviews etc. In order to be able to do those, I don't want them to feel uncomfortable of the fact that they don't have the necessary materials. I want to see them proud of their work as they follow the challenging path of learning English.
